United Nations Human Resources Development: Asia Branch
As soon as Jeong Taeui arrived at Chek Lap Kok airport, he saw a car waiting to pick him up. A tall man who didn’t look like a driver at all quietly walked towards his uncle and put his suitcase in the trunk, while Jeong Taeui only carried his only luggage, a small Boston backpack, he put his backpack next to his uncle’s suitcase, then opened the car door and sat down next to his uncle.
The pamphlet his uncle had given him had brief descriptions of where he was going along with a few photos. The truth is that these newspapers promoting foreign affairs often do not have any really useful information, it only takes a few minutes for you to see all the information in them. But before leaving, he also tried to do a quick search about that place.
The car left the airport while Jeong Taeui finished reading the book and fanned himself with it. The uncle sitting next to him immediately took the book back from Jeong Taeui’s hand, then turned a few pages and smiled. Surely he also thinks that printing this book is a useless waste of paper.
“Easier to understand, it is a place for officials from public and private organizations in each country or a certain organization to train key people for them.”
“Speaking so rhetorically, in the end, it’s just raising and selling people to organizations in other countries, isn’t it?”
“What are you talking about? Anyway, there’s a long line of people who want to be sold like that.”
Even though he didn’t mean any criticism, his uncle still responded without any discomfort.
Jeong Taeui took back the book his uncle gave him. Instead of the boring words, he was attracted by the pictures on it. That is the image of men standing in rows with solemn faces, the training room is equipped with the most advanced and modern technology.
“Are any of the people in this photo your type?”
The guy next to him looked over and looked at the book together and smiled. Jeong Taeui frowned and shook his head.
“My taste isn’t that easy….. I don’t want to hug these tall, big guys with manly scents like this. I like someone who is soft and lovely, smells like soap or milk. But I think that person probably doesn’t exist in this industry.”
“Does it smell like soap or milk….. Having sex with a minor is illegal even in China. Let’s see, just get past the iron fence of the branch and it is in fact an extra-territorial jurisdiction. But there are no minors there either. As for the rest, feel free to touch it.”
(*Extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ): the legal ability of a government to exercise authority beyond its normal boundaries => This means that outside the territorial boundaries of the branch, UNHRDO laws are not applied.)
“……Uncle. How can a decent person turn into a criminal who molested a minor in the blink of an eye like that….. I’ve never met any kids in the single digits or anyone in their teens.”
Changin chuckled. Jeong Taeui looked intently at his uncle then raised his voice and said casually.
“If you were twenty years younger, you might be exactly my style.”
Only then did the smile disappear from his uncle’s face for a moment. He blinked and looked at him strangely, but then laughed again. He shrugged as if he understood and then changed the subject.
“Once you get there, you’ll find it. Any questions?”
“Let see…… You have to know something to be able to ask questions, but I don’t know anything, so just go with the flow.”
Jeong Taeui put the book down on his knees and looked out the window. The road from the airport to the city center always has a similar shape. The highway was clear and there was nothing special to see. Jeong Taeui immediately opened his mouth.
“Hyung also worked at the US headquarters before, right?”
(*형 (hyeong; hyung) Literal meaning: “older brother” Is also used to call: A male friend or a male sibling who’s older than you (as a male) => Jeong Jaeui*)
“Jaeui? Right. That kid is so smart that Brain House still covets him now.”
Jeong Taeui briefly looked back at his uncle.
“What is Brain House? Is the headquarters and branches divided like that?
“Not exactly, but in general it’s like that. The headquarters is considered Brain House because even if a member has a physical disability but has a smart mind, you can still enter. If you want to enter a branch, you must have physical strength….. But that doesn’t mean you can enter a branch just by being good at fighting and not having brains. Simply put, the branch aims to train people like MacGyver.”
(*MacGyver (1985 TV series): The show follows secret agent Angus MacGyver, played by Richard Dean Anderson, who works as a troubleshooter for the fictional Phoenix Foundation in Los Angeles and as an agent for a fictional United States government agency, the Department of External Services (DXS).*)
“MacGyver….. I don’t have the confidence to reach that level.”
“Why, just roll around in there for a few months and you’ll be fine.”
Jeong Taeui looked at his uncle talking happily with a bored expression.
So the branches aren’t that different, right?”
“Um, that’s right. The training process is the same. But there are times when there will be joint training sessions between branches depending on the circumstances. However, each branch has a different atmosphere. The South American members are a bit crazy, the African branch is very cruel, the ones from Australia are a bit unlucky and the Europeans are all extremely unlucky.”
Its cheerful voice and content are unique. Jeong Taeui silently exclaimed.
“Is this branch’s relationship with the European side bad?”
“The relationship between headquarters and branches is not very good, nor is the relationship between branches. They are inherently competitive people. Among them, the Asian branch and the European branch have the worst relationship. Every year there will be a joint training session lasting 15 days, very bloody……. but worth watching.”
“………..”
This uncle, instead of considering the European branch as bad luck, seemed to enjoy the bloody atmosphere.
How to say. His uncle didn’t look friendly at all, but nonetheless, the thoughts in his head and appearance were very significantly different. Sometimes a person as familiar with him as he is also has to open his mouth in bewilderment.
Jeong Taeui buried himself in the chair, feeling comfortable having a place soft and comfortable enough to take a nap.
His uncle came like a storm and took him away. He had to go out for several days and couldn’t even rest properly. If he closed his eyes, he could immediately fall asleep.
Perhaps he realized that Jeong Taeui was about to fall asleep, so he quietly spoke.
“If you want to adapt in a short time, it’s a bit difficult. Even though I want to tell you to close your eyes right now, we’ll be at the dock in a little while. You’ll probably be even more tired after sleeping.”
“The dock?”
Jeong Taeui turned his head. He doesn’t know when cars entered the inner city, the road gradually filled with buildings. Messy signs were scattered overhead with old buildings similar to where Jeong Taeui lived located close together. Just look up at the brightly sparkling stores to see hanging racks of freshly washed clothes protruding from the crumbling, cracked and peeling buildings.
“Is the Asia branch on Hong Kong Island?”
“Not.”
“But why do we have to go to the docks?”
“We have to go by boat.”
“…… So it’s in Macau?”
The uncle burst out laughing. Jeong Taeui looked at his uncle shyly. They were heading to Kowloon, but if not Hong Kong Island, then Macau was the only name that came to his mind right now.
The uncle shook his head.
“It’s an island. This island is quite far from Hong Kong Island. Administratively it belongs to Hong Kong – China, but in reality it is an extra-territorial jurisdiction. The Asian branch of UNHRDO is located there.”
“Ha….. …..it’s like prisoners being locked up on a remote island for fear of them escaping like the old days.”
“I can’t deny that that place has absolutely no such intentions.”
He still smiled and spoke, then looked at Jeong Taeui.
“Changing shifts every two weeks. From 5pm on Friday to 5pm on Sunday, your child will be free to move, so go out and play then. To serve members, there will be boats to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula on that day.”
“Hearing what you say……”
“Hmm?”
“There is only the Asia branch of UNHRDO there, right?”
“Bingo.”
Jeong Taeui smiled bitterly and shook his head.
After crossing the street in the middle of the city center and turning into a towering hotel, he saw a dock in the distance.
Jeong Taeui, who was indifferently looking at Hong Kong Island out at sea, which could easily be seen at this location, suddenly turned his head.
“I’m curious about one more thing.”
“Huh?”
“What should I call you there?”
Uncle laughed. And he replied with a face that mixed an expression between a family member and a superior.
“Instructor Jeong Changin, in short, Instructor.”
